The Advantages of Registering Your Aircraft in the Isle of Man
With a strong foundation in the EU, Isle of Man (IOM), Netherlands and UK, our team supports clients with complex needs across multiple jurisdictions. From ownership solutions to tax guidance and customs assistance, we provide trusted assurance for high value assets, globally.
This article explores why the Isle of Man stands out as a premier jurisdiction for registering business aircraft. The choice of registration can have a profound effect on operating costs, regulatory obligations, and financial efficiency. With a reputation for streamlined processes and global recognition, the Isle of Man has become a leading destination for owners of business jets and twin turbine helicopters.
No Insurance Premium Tax (IPT)
Whilst we do not provide insurance products, the following fact is a personal favourite amongst our specialist teams; registering an aircraft in the Isle of Man means zero Insurance Premium Tax (IPT).
In many jurisdictions, IPT is an additional charge applied to insurance policies. In the UK, for instance, aircraft owners face a 12% tax on their insurance premiums, an extra cost that can add up to tens of thousands of pounds annually. Since the IOM does not impose IPT, owners enjoy immediate savings on essential insurance coverage.
In the first half of 2025, the purchase price of a Gulfstream G700 was approximately $74.7 million. Insuring a jet of this value would typically cost around $150k, which when registered in the UK incurs an Insurance Premium Tax (IPT) of 12%, adding circa £18k in additional cost.
By choosing to register the aircraft in the IOM, where IPT doesn’t apply to aircraft insurance, owners can potentially save thousands, making it a financially shrewd choice for high value asset registration.
In addition unlike VAT, IPT is not reclaimable, although where it is a business expense it may be treated as an allowable expense and offset against turnover to reduce net profit.
Our experienced team works across numerous respected jurisdictions to deliver the right ownership and registration solutions for each client’s bespoke needs. With trusted insight and international reach, we help ensure confidence, compliance, and peace of mind every step of the way.

- It was created to promote safe, efficient, and orderly international air transport.
- It sets global standards and recommended practices (SARPs) for everything from aircraft operations and air traffic control to airport design and environmental protection.
- ICAO has 193 member states and is headquartered in Montréal, Canada.
- It assigns four letter airport codes (like EGLL for London Heathrow) and works closely with national aviation authorities to ensure consistency across borders.
In short, ICAO is the backbone of international civil aviation cooperation. Its role is also regulatory and diplomatic, helping countries align on aviation safety, security, and sustainability.
Owners benefit from a professional, risk managed approach to aircraft operation, reinforcing confidence among financiers, operators, and insurers alike.

The IOM is also seen as a favourable jurisdiction from a lenders perspective. The security around the IOM is recognised and acknowledged by lenders.
Other considerations
If the aircraft is on an AOC you can charter the aircraft. AOC matters as the operations of the aircraft are restricted e.g. pilots can fly for less hours and the runway must be longer.
The Isle of Man allows for greater levels of service, they conform to regulatory standards ESAS and the FAA. They adhere to the safety standards and requirements with regards to the aircraft.
Example: If you buy an aircraft in the United States and want to take the aircraft into Europe it will need to be modified to meet the EU specifications. Using the IOM means that you don’t have to make any modifications. Therefore you can buy in the EU or USA and the pool to purchase from is wider. The IOM provides greater flexibility and reduces modification costs. Pilots licences must also match the relevant body, the IOM will accept either license therefore you have a wider field of talent to select from to fly the aircraft.
