The Isle of Man YET Scheme

The Isle of Man YET Scheme

A smarter approach to asset utilisation.

The Isle of Man Ship Registry’s introduction of the Yacht Engaged in Trade (YET) Scheme marks a significant step forward for owners seeking greater flexibility from their high value assets. Designed for private yachts of 24 metres and above, the scheme allows vessels to undertake a limited amount of charter activity while retaining their private status. Specifically, participating yachts can charter for up to 84 days per year in designated European waters, including France, Monaco and Greece.

For many superyacht owners, the attraction lies in the ability to generate revenue without committing to a permanent commercial registration structure. Traditionally, owners have faced a clear distinction between private and commercial operation. The YET Scheme introduces a practical middle ground, allowing owners to offset operational costs while maintaining the lifestyle and privacy benefits associated with private ownership.

The financial implications are particularly compelling. Large yachts carry substantial annual costs, including crew salaries, maintenance, insurance, berthing fees and regulatory compliance. By opening the door to carefully managed charter activity, owners have an opportunity to recover part of these expenses without fundamentally altering the vessel’s ownership or use profile.

An additional advantage of the YETS scheme is that it helps keep the crew engaged and motivated. Charter operations provide valuable experience that supports career progression, offer the potential for tips, and contribute to maintaining the exceptional onboard standards that owners expect. Talent retention in yacht crew is key.

Importantly, the scheme does not compromise safety or regulatory standards. Participating yachts must comply with the commercial Red Ensign Group Yacht Code and maintain the same inspection, survey and compliance standards expected of commercial vessels. This provides reassurance to charter clients while protecting the reputation and value of the asset itself.

The principles behind the YET Scheme also reflect a broader trend among owners of high value mobile assets. Whether considering superyachts, aviation assets or helicopters, there is increasing interest in achieving greater utilisation without sacrificing flexibility. Owners are looking for ownership structures that allow assets to generate value when not in personal use, while remaining fully compliant with complex international regulatory, VAT and tax requirements.

For the Isle of Man, the launch of the YET Scheme further strengthens its position as a leading jurisdiction for sophisticated asset ownership and management. For owners, family offices and advisers, it provides a credible and commercially attractive solution that balances private enjoyment, operational efficiency and revenue generation.

In an environment where cost management, compliance and flexibility are increasingly important, the YET Scheme offers a welcome evolution in the way high value assets can be owned and operated.
