Why The IOM’s Register Wins

Why The IOM’s Register Wins

Final Thoughts

In this last article, Juan McGuinness wraps up whether we should look for quality or openness with our beneficial ownership registries.

Looking ahead the UK is converging on the Manx model by licensing formation agents, rolling out ID checks and giving Companies House power to refuse suspect filings. Until those reforms bed in, investigators and banks may continue to treat UK PSC data with caution.

The Isle of Man, meanwhile, has committed to:

  • exploring next step analytics
  • risk based assessments of the registry data
  • taking steps to increase transparency and
  • accessibility to information held alongside Jersey and Guernsey

Its central message to policymakers is that robust privacy controls and absolute public transparency are not mutually exclusive.

The bottom line is that a well governed private register can deliver more for law enforcement, compliance teams and financial centre reputation than a poorly policed public one. The UK’s recent purge is proof. As other jurisdictions debate transparency versus privacy, the Isle of Man model of verify first and publish wisely deserves a close look.
