Tariffs, Aircraft And Trade: What Comes Next?

Tariffs, Aircraft And Trade: What Comes Next?

15 Jul, 2025

Phill Rawlins, Customs Director, takes a closer look at the recent tariff announcements and their impact on us all.

It feels like we have replaced the dreaded ‘Brexit’ word, with the recurring ‘tariff’ saga looming over all aspects of US global trade.

Currently the European Union and United States agreement deadline has been pushed back from 7 July to 1 August 2025, with President Trump threatening 30% tariff on all EU goods.

With regard to aircraft, it remains uncertain what reciprocal tariffs the EU Commission may impose. These are still being investigated and part of their list out for consultation, but all indicators point to 10% duty rate on US manufactured aircraft being the likely outcome.

If the 30% tariff is imposed by the US, the EU may apply the same reciprocally.  It has been seen that these larger numbers are part of President Trumps negotiating tactics, but no one can know sure.

The immediate message is for those planning or thinking about importing business aircraft into the EU, act now and speak to our specialist teams.  We are prepared to move swiftly to support your operations.

Shifting our focus to longer term, the situation remains fluid.  It’s a watch and wait scenario, especially given how quickly conditions have shifted in recent months.

Elsewhere, there does not appear to be any imminent changes to Temporary Admission for aircraft in the EU. This is still a free to use simplification that does not require any paperwork or documentation.

Where this is applicable to your operations and you meet the requirements, it may be the best route for occasional EU use of your aircraft.

If you’d like to learn more about Temporary Admissions or are considering importing business aircraft or other high value assets, contact phill@martynfiddler.com.
