Martyn Fiddler believe internships should provide meaningful opportunities to learn, develop and contribute.
As Marketing Intern, Caeli Plumbley’s, internship draws to a close, we asked her to reflect on her experience over the past 18 months.
A Reflection by Caeli Plumbley
When I joined Martyn Fiddler 18 months ago, I had very little knowledge of the business, the corporate services industry, or what to expect from life in a professional office environment.
At the time, I was studying for a Marketing degree and looking for an opportunity to gain practical experience alongside my studies. Like many students considering internships, I hoped to gain real world experience but wasn’t sure how much responsibility I would actually be given.
Fortunately, my experience proved to be far more rewarding than I anticipated.
One of the things I appreciated most was that I never felt like ‘just the intern’. From day one, I was welcomed into the business, introduced to colleagues across different teams, and trusted with meaningful work. That trust made a huge difference to my confidence and development, allowing me to contribute rather than simply observe.
What made the experience particularly valuable was the opportunity to shape it around my own interests. Whenever I expressed an interest in a particular area, people were willing to invest time in helping me learn and develop.
Over the past 18 months, I have had the opportunity to manage weekly newsletters, support a company rebrand and website rebuild, and even participate in the recruitment process for the incoming intern. However, the standout experience was undoubtedly my involvement in the Isle of Man Aviation Conference (IOMAC).
After supporting the event in 2025, I was given the opportunity to take a leading role in coordinating the 2026 conference and its associated networking events. From delegate communications and event marketing to logistics and sponsor management, I was trusted to take ownership of significant elements of the event while knowing support was always available when needed.
One of the most rewarding moments came during the conference itself. Senior colleagues were approaching me with questions and looking to me for direction throughout the day. It was a clear reminder of how much I had grown since joining the business. Having the opportunity to speak on the “Next Gen Voices” panel was another highlight and something I am particularly proud of.
Beyond the projects themselves, the biggest thing I have gained from my internship is confidence. I have learned how theory translates into practice whilst navigating a professional environment.
Looking back, what I am most grateful for is the opportunity to make the internship my own. Rather than following a rigid path, I was encouraged to explore areas that interested me, challenge myself, and take on responsibilities that helped me grow both professionally and personally.
As I reflect on the past 18 months, I feel incredibly thankful for the opportunities, experiences and support I have received. It has been a privilege to be part of the Martyn Fiddler team, and an experience that will have a lasting impact on my career for many years to come. I would also like to take this opportunity to wish the next marketing intern all the best in the role.
